The Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team grabbed fourth place at the Southeast Iowa Superconference volleyball tournament this weekend.

The Wolves finished fourth last year, and this year went 4-0 in pool play and beat Highland in the quarterfinals 25-21 and 25-20 to make it to the semifinals, where they played No. 1 Holy Trinity Catholic and lost 25-10 and 25-9. In the consolation match the Wolves lost to No. 4 New London 25-16 and 25-23.

Erica Robinson and Shelby Therme both led the team in kills with 15, while Taylor Rodgers had 24 assists, and Lou Krieger-Coen had five blocks on the day. Therme also led the team in digs with 22.

WMU head coach Dave Pieart said it was a good tournament to help get back on track, but there are still things that could be improved.

“We can’t terribly complain about it, we did finish where we did last year and this is the first time that Winfield-Mt.Union has made the final four two years in a row in 16 or more years,” Pieart said. “At the same time we could have played better, especially against New London, we did let a lead slip away in one of the sets, and that’s always disappointed, so some positives and definitely some things to still work on.”

WMU is now 14-9 overall and plays Highland tomorrow.
