The Winfield- Mt. Union volleyball team had a slow start this weekend at the West Branch tournament and ended the tournament 3-2.

The Wolves faced Iowa City Regina first and was swept 21-13 and 21-17, they then faced Eddyville-Blakesburg and lost 21-6 and 21-19.

WMU stepped up their game in their last pool play game, beating conference opponent Lone Tree 21-10 and 21-7. WMU moved to the consolation bracket and beat English Valleys 25-10 and 25-16 and then beat Lone Tree again 25-9 and 25-5.

Erica Robinson led the team in kills with 22, while Taylor Rodgers led the team in assists with 34 and Brooke Jennings was right behind with 29. Rodgers also was 100 percent in serves with nine aces, while Shelby Therme had 22 digs.

Head coach Dave Pieart said the team made the changes they needed to in the afternoon to get where they needed to be.

“Well by the time we got to Lone Tree in the final match in pool play, we made some mental adjustments as to how fast we were going to play and how hard we were going to concentrate, so the afternoon for us did go significantly easier than the morning, but you know, we would have rather seen us do that for all five matches,” Pieart said.

WMU plays again on Thursday as they start their conference season off with L-M.
