The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office has released more information regarding an infant’s death in Libertyville earlier this month. According to the attorney’s office, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a residence at about 4:45 a.m. October 11th and a search warrant was granted for the property. During the search, the deceased infant girl, which appeared to be recently born, was found in a closet in the residence. It was determined that the previous morning a 15-year-old female had given birth to the child.

The 15-year-old has been charged with Child Endangerment Resulting in Death.

The offense, if committed by an adult, is punishable as a Class B felony resulting in up to 50 years in prison, however due to the female’s age the charge is being filed in Jefferson County Juvenile Court. Iowa law does allow the option to waive the juvenile to adult court and according to the attorney’s office, all options are still being considered. Also, the attorney’s office reminds that the delinquent charge is an accusation and the juvenile is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, the Jefferson County Medical Examiner, the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office.

KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official.
