Crime Stoppers, Utilities Combat Copper Theft

Crime Stoppers and Iowa’s electric utilities have come together to combat the theft of copper from electric utilities. Thefts have been reported across Iowa and may cause power outages, fires or explosions. At this time scrap copper is selling for approximately $3 per pound. Crime Stoppers and the utlity agencies have created a toll-free phone line for people to anonymously report suspicious activities around utility substations and other equipment. Once the phone line is called, local authorities will be notified. The Crim Stoppers number is 1-800-452-1111.
