Some area farmers are dealing with weak cornstalks. According to Agronomist with Stine Seed, John Furlong, farmers should be out scouting their fields for stalk rot. He says the abrupt change from cool, wet weather in the spring to the hot and dry conditions this summer led to brittle plants that are dying prematurely. He advises farmers to combine the fields with stalk rot as soon as possible to avoid further damage.
