Winter weather is quickly approaching and horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach have recommended how to prepare gardens for the season. Ornamental grasses should be left intact and cut back in April. Mums should also be left intact because of their shallow roots. Also, it is recommended to cover garden mums with several inches of straw or pine needles in late November. Peony foliage should be cut back after a hard freeze, generally in late October or early November.
