The Washington Demon wrestling team will kick things off this week, and look to start quick this year.
The Demons are looking to get their first conference title in awhile, but will have to get through Ft. Madison, said head coach Brent Van Weelden. He added that both teams are very capable of having very good seasons.
“You know we want to win conference, we haven’t done that yet since I have been here and it has been a long time since Washington has brought home a conference title, but I have to go with Ft. Madison being the favorite again, they have a lot of guys back just like us, and where we’re good, they’re good and where we’re a little bit weak, they’re a little bit weak, so we have to find a way to beat their good guys,” Van Weelden said. “So I’d say they’re probably in the drivers seat.”
Washington returns two state qualifiers in Tristan Pohren and state champion Fletcher Green, who will have a target on his back for most of the year.
The Demons open up with a triangular on Thursday against Highland and Louisa Muscatine at L-M.
The Demons will see Ft. Madison for the first time on Jan. 9, and will wrestle school rival Mt. Pleasant in a dual on Jan. 16.
