Over 50 homes and businesses in Kalona are expected to be removed from the 100 year floodplain. The Iowa Flood Center has analyzed a detailed study of Salvesen creek and determined those structures sit on land FEMA incorrectly included in the floodplain. To have the map amended, a letter will be sent to FEMA. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says it will take around two months to draft the letter, and up to ninety days for the government agency to process the amendment.
