Initially federally funded, a nutrition education program has been able to continue with the help of local organizations. Through the Pick a Better Snack Program, students get a short nutritional lesson once a week for nine weeks, and the chance to sample different fruits and vegetables.
Amy Green with the Washington County Extension Office conducts these lessons in 1st and 2nd grade classes at Stewart Elementary and Kalona Elementary.
She says a Washington County Riverboat grant has allowed them to continue the program for the past three years. They’ve applied for another Riverboat grant this year, and are receiving financial help from Washington Optimists and Noon Kiwanis.
