Christmas is four weeks away and many trees are being decorated this weekend. Iowa State Universty Extension and Outreach has a few reminders for those who decide to have a live tree in their home this holiday season. When selecting a tree, run a hand over a branch, if many needles fall the tree is dry. Before bringing the tree inside, cut an inch of the bottom of the trunk off to increase water uptake. Do not place the tree near a heat source and no additives to the water are advised to benefit the tree, simply keep the tree reservoir full of water and check it twice a day. Generally, a fresh, well-cared-for tree should last three to four weeks in a home.
