The Winfield- Mt. Union volleyball team has their chance to go to state tonight, but they have to get past the one team that continues to rain on that parade.

WMU and Holy Trinity Catholic square off again tonight for the sub-state finals in a rematch of last years sweep of Holy Trinity over WMU.

The Wolves are 25-10 winning their last six in a row. Their lead hitter is Erica Robinson with 266 kills, followed by Shelby Therme with 203. Brooke Jennings has the hands with 365 assists, with Taylor Rodgers is right behind her with 317 assists, and Therme is the leading digger with 309.

Holy Trinity is 44-4, losing only to 4A Johnston twice, West Des Moines Valley and Dowling Catholic. Outside of those loses they have only given up two sets the entire season, one to Cedar Rapids Prairie and one to Epworth.

They are No. 1 or in the top three in every offensive statistical category. Led by Mikaela Foecke who has 644 kills on the year she is assisted by Maria Vonderhaar with 1,008 assists and digs are spread around throughout the team.

WMU head coach Dave Pieart said if his team can win one game, maybe that will throw off Holy Trinity’s grove.

“I’m kind of hoping a game like Sigourney helps us,” Pieart said. “Holy Trinity has not gone past three games in any match this year, so we are kind of hoping that if we can push them to four or five, it get into territory that we’re comfortable with and they’re not.”

This game is at Mt. Pleasant tonight and start at 7 P.M.
