The Winfield-Mt.Union girl’s basketball team snuck past Columbus Junction last night to open the season.
The Wolves won 46-40 in a game that the first quarter meant everything.
WMU came out and outscored the Wildcats 11-6 in the opening quarter to grab the lead. After that the game was played pretty close, with WMU leading 24-17 at half.
In the second half Columbus Junction outscored the wolves 14-12, but still trailed 36- 31 after three, and couldn’t come back in the fourth quarter dropping the game 46-40 and giving WMU their opening win on the road.
The Wolves were led by Shelby Therme with 12 points, followed by Layne Davis with eight and Nicole Escher off the bench with six. Therme was just a rebound away from a double-double to start off the season.
WMU moves to 1-0 and plays West Liberty on Saturday, while Columbus Junction falls to 1-1 and plays Mediapolis on Dec. 3.
