A Brighton man has been charged by the Department of Natural Resources for multiple offenses involving whitetail deer. On Thursday, 55-year-old Thomas Charest was charged with two counts of illegal possession of whitetail deer, one count of taking a buck deer over bait, one count of taking deer out of season and one count of hunting deer without a license or habitat fee.

He was found in possession of an illegal deer scoring 165 inches, and two deer from South Dakota and one from North Dakota. The investigation is continuing on the deer from the Dakotas. He will appear in court next week; he faces fines and civil penatlies of $6,170.

According to the Iowa DNR, Charest allegedly shot a buck deer over bait in September at his residence near Brighton. The deer scored around 140 inches. Also, Charest allegedly shot a deer scoring 179 inches over bait in October 2012 that he reported to the DNR’s harvest reporting system then took another deer that scored 145-150 inches around New Years Day without a tag.

A call to the Turn in Poachers hotline lead to the charges. Charest’s bow, arrows and the deer were seized by conservation officers.
