The Washington Demon girl’s basketball team is back in action tonight when they travel to Williamsburg.

This will be the first away game for Washington, and they are coming off just a day break after their win over the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks.

Washington has struggled from the free throw line this season, shooting just around 50 percent so far, including their last game in which they had 48 attempts and only made 28 of them. The good news for the Demons is they have scored an average of 51.5 points in their two games and head coach Phil Long always says the first team to 50 usually wins.

Washington is led in the scoring department by Dema Giardino, who scored 17 points in their last game, and followed by Stephanie Fishback, so the Demons do have some perimeter shooters on hand.

Williamsburg is 3-0 this season, and is ranked preseason No. 7 in class 3A. They beat preseason No. 9 Mt. Pleasant in their last game 45-38.

The Raiders have averaged 53 points in their three games this season.

Long says the Demon must hold Paige Greiner to a low scoring night to give the Demons a chance at the win.

“I think quite honestly if we can hold [Greiner] somewhere in that 15-17 category and stop the rest of them from getting more than 30 as a total and keep it in that 45-47 [point total] then we have a chance to win,” Long said. “I’ve always said the first team to 50 is always the team that win, and as bad as the scoring has been in Southeast Iowa the last couple of years, I’m not so sure 40 isn’t the new number.”
