The Washington Demon girl’s basketball team went on the road for the first time this season and took their first loss.

Washington took on No. 5 in 3A Williamsburg and stayed shot-for-shot with them all game long, forcing overtime, but taking the 55-49 loss in OT.

The Demons struggled out of the gate getting three points on the board fairly quickly, but then turnovers and a 13-0 run by the Raiders put the Demons in a huge hole. A couple of 3-pointers by Dema Giardino and Amber Salow pulled the Demons up within seven at the end of the first down 16-9.

The second quarter was a completely different Washington team, defending the Raiders heavily and not allowing Paige Greiner to get a whole lot of looks. Washington held Williamsburg scoreless until 4:34 in the second quarter, when they made their first point off a free throw. The Demons outscored the Raiders 14-7 in the second quarter, and shot 75 percent from the free throw line in the first half to go into halftime tied 23-23.

In the second half both teams struggled getting anything going offensively, but Greiner started to wind up as she nailed a three and the Demons and Raiders were tied once again after three 31-31.

In the fourth Washington had a five-point lead getting into the closing minutes, that the Raiders made up with some excellent shooting, but the Demons battled back and got a two-point lead with seconds remaining. Williamsburg gave the ball to Greiner, opened the lane and Washington went with them leaving it wide open for Greiner to drive in and around and make a layup to send the game into OT.

The overtime period was rough on the Demons, as Williamsburg gained a lot of momentum from the tie game, and Washington could not convert on their free throws, going 1-4 in overtime, and 7-14 in the second half and overtime combined.

The Demons fell 55-49 to Williamsburg. Demon head coach Phil Long said his team played hard against a quality opponent.

“To Williamsburg’s credit they really held their composure in that last minute of regulation and into the overtime, and I thought that we somewhat panicked a bit in what we were trying to do, but boy my kids still played really hard,” Long said. “They got an ear full when they were down 16-3 and we were just turning it over [constantly] and the next thing you look up and it’s 16-16, and that is just what this team is capable of, and we’re tied at half, tied at the third quarter, tied at the end of four quarters, and that is just two evenly matched teams.”

The Demons were led on the score sheet by Grace Redlinger, Dema Giardino and Amber Salow each with nine points in the game.

Washington falls to 2-1 on the season and plays Solon tomorrow.
