The Mid-Prairie and Sigourney wrestling teams were in action Saturday at the 48th annual Mt. Vernon Invitational tournament. In the team championship race the host Mustangs topped the leaderboard with 220 points. Other finishes of note included River Valley Conference squad West Liberty in 5th place with 117.5 points, Mid-Prairie in 6th with 95 points and area school Sigourney in 8th with 85 points.

Individually the Golden Hawks top finisher was Duncan McCain who was crowned champion at 106lbs. McCain won the title match over Ross Randall of West Marshall 9-2, but his match of the day came in the semifinals when he erased a 7-0 third period deficit to advance. Other finishers for the Golden Hawks included Blake Murphy in sixth place at 120lbs, Visouth Peterschmidt in fifth place at 152lbs, Miguel Sanchez in fourth place at 160lbs, Cameron Tolander in fifth place at 170lbs, Phirom Peterschmidt runner up at 195lbs and Ben Fiordelise in fourth place at 220lbs.

The Sigourney wrestlers were led by Nathan Fritz who claimed the championship at 138lbs. Fritz pinned Mt. Vernon’s Ryan Miller in 3:13. Other finishers for the Savages included Jeremiah Green in fifth place at 132lbs, Lane Boender in third place at 145lbs, Noah Schuster in fifth place at 182lbs and Tucker Fowler runner up at 220lbs.
