The Mid-Prairie basketball teams open River Valley Conference play tonight, when they host North Cedar.

The Mid-Prairie girls have one game under their belt against Washington, while the boys open their season with this game.

The Lady Golden Hawks had foul trouble in their game against Washington, taking 30 plus in the game. Courtney Cayton is the leading scorer, with eight points per game, followed closely by Courtney Shalla and Ali Riggan with six points per game.

The only returner with extensive experience is Taylor Kurtz, and she was held to just one point against the Demons.

North Cedar is 0-1 this year, losing to No. 4 Cascade Western Dubuque 46-40 on Tuesday. Alison Malaby is the top returning scorer with 9.3 points per game, but no North Cedar player has scored over eight points against Mid-Prairie.

On the boy’s side for the Golden Hawks, they return quite a few scorers, including Dayton Hall with 10.8 points per game and Nick Stimson with 8.1 points per game, and both shooting 33 percent or better from the field and over 30 percent from behind the arc. Traditionally Mid-Prairie has a losing record to North Cedar, losing the last five straight.

North Cedar beat the Golden Hawks last year 74-42, and they return a couple of players that averaged over 10 points per game. Jayden Johnson and Jacob Hay both were over 10 point averages and shot over 41 percent from the field last year.

While this is a conference game for both teams, they are not in the same division.

This game is at Mid-Prairie tonight with tip-off of the girls at 6:00 PM and the boys around 8:00 PM.
