The company Wellman buys its natural gas from has increased its rates. The city owns its own natural gas system, and has a contract with Clayton Energy, who purchases the gas and negotiates with the pipeline owners.
At this week’s City Council meeting, that contract was amended to increase the purchase price. City Administrator Nick Pacha says this is the first increase since they started doing business with the company 13 years ago.
He says the additional $1,000 a year won’t directly impact homeowners. The city purchases around $300,000 worth of natural gas annually.
