Amaryllis may flower annually. According to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the winter blooming flower may re-flower if properly cared for. When the flower fades, cut the flower stalk 1 to 2 inches above the bulb. In order for it to bloom next season, the plant needs to replenish food reserves. The leaves manufacture the food for the plant and should not be damaged. Place the amaryllis in a sunny window and water when the soil surface is nearly dry. It can be moved outdoors in late May.
