A sewer line in Wellman is plugged and has caused a manhole to overflow on 9th Avenue. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the sewage entered a storm sewer drain and an unknown quantity has reached Smith Creek. A contractor has been hired by the City of Wellman to unplug the sewer line and remove the sewage from the affected areas, however the extreme weather conditions are making it difficult to fix the issue quickly. People and pets should avoid the spill areas for at least 48 hours. The DNR is monitoring the situation.
