Farmers should be mindful of their livestock’s safety during cold spells like the one we’re experiencing. Tom Miller, with Iowa State University Extension, says for those raising pigs, make sure their building is warm and that your LP tank has enough fuel to keep it that way. He says for cattle kept outside, ensuring they have enough water, sufficient bedding, and extra food is advised. He explains that in order to stay warm when it gets as cold as it is, cattle need to eat more to keep up with the additional energy consumption.
