The Washington and Mid-Prairie boys’ basketball teams will take to the court tonight for the second half of the county rivalry.

This game was scheduled for the very beginning of the season, but was postponed due to the Demon’s run in football.

Washington comes into this game 2-6 on the season, and off recent losses to Mt. Pleasant and Iowa City Regina. The Demons are scoring 52.1 points per game, but have also turned it over 101 times and are shooting just 39 percent from the floor. The leading scorer is Gage Redlinger with 10 points per game; he also makes 54 percent of his shots from the floor. Mason Quigley is scoring 8.9 per game, and Blake Weidman is at 8.3.

Head coach Bryce Smeins says Mid-Prairie is well coached and having just one day to prepare will make it a tough game.

“They’re a team that will play extremely hard, coach Kern does a good job with them over at Mid-Prairie. Full court pressure, they shoot it well and they are really aggressive on defense and they attack the rim on offense, so it will be a tough game for us, but that is any county rivalry game,” Smeins said. “It’s one of those games that you should be fired up for right now, and that will be our third game in five days, so not a lot of prep time for Mid-Prairie, but it should be an exciting game.”

Mid-Prairie has lost a couple of close games this year, but they are coming in off of a win over Wilton on Friday.

The Golden Hawks are scoring 62.3 points per game and are shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 35 percent from down town. Mid-Prairie looks to their whole team to score, but Dayton Hall at 11.8 points per game and Nick Stimson at 11.1 are the most dangerous. Nathan Faselt and Spencer Shalla both come in with over eight points per game and Christian Johnson and Riley Sieren have seven.

Golden Hawk head coach Chris Kern says Washington is always ready for the county rivalry game, but that his team is ready to play.

“Coach Smeins always has his kids ready with Washington, we know that they’re a good team and are coming off a big win over IMS, and we know that any time Washington and Mid-Prairie plays it’s a great game, and we’ll be ready and I know they’ll be ready,” Kern said.
