Even with the intense start to our winter, the City of Kalona has used about the same amount of supplies to keep roads free of ice. The city averages about 3 pallets of sand and salt a year, or about 6,000 pounds of material. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says they haven’t had issues with shortages, but finding salt from this point on may be a bit more difficult. He says this late in the season they keep the salt and sand separate until it’s needed.
