Demon girls basketball coach Phil Long has his head shaven by his team for Coaches vs. Cancer.

The Demon basketball teams put on a show for the Coaches vs. Cancer crowd, both getting convincing wins.

The girls led things off with a huge win over Tipton, and breaking their three game losing streak. Washington only led by one after the first quarter 12-11, but the second quarter was not only an offensive show, but a defensive clinic, holding Tipton a single free throw the entire second quarter and leading 36-12 at half. Washington rode out the lead through the game on their way to the 51-31 victory.

The girls were led by Stephanie Fishback with 13, and Amber Salow with nine. Sydney Hoffman had eight, and was 6-6 from the free throw line.

The boys had a huge first half against Tipton, scoring 24 in the first quarter and leading 24-6 after the first quarter off of hot shooting from Thomas Bump, but after the first Washington faltered a little. The Demons found themselves still in the lead at half 38-25, but Tipton didn’t go away quietly.

The second half was once again delayed as a halftime fundraiser for Coaches vs. Cancer went long, and Washington came out a little off. The Tigers started to fight their way back into the game, down 13 after three 50-37.

Tipton scored 25 in the fourth quarter and got as close as seven, but the Demons hung on for the win 71-62.

Washington was led by Gage Redlinger with 19 points and Thomas Bumb with 18. Daryn Seibelius and Blake Weidman both came in with 10.

Washington will next be in action Tuesday, when the boys host West Liberty and the girls travel down to Keokuk.
