The Washington Demon boys basketball team loss to Grinnell last night.

Coming off of a late game down at Keokuk, Washington looked tired on their feet in the first half as Grinnell rained in 10 three-pointers in the game to win 64-49.

Washington was in the game for the opening minutes, thanks to Thomas Bump’s nine points in the first quarter, but once the Tigers started hitting their threes, there was no stopping them. Grinnell hit four in the first quarter, and seven in the first half to lead 40-23 at half.

At the start of the second half, Washington came out and looked much better, stopping Grinnell’s offense and getting what was a lead of 20 down to 12 at one point, but the Demons couldn’t hang on to the tempo and left Joe Schmidt open to nail two threes. Grinnell led the Demons after three 52-35. The final quarter was all Grinnell straight to the finish.

Washington head coach Bryce Smeins said his team still needs to play that full game that he has been looking for.

“A very tough match-up, but if we can play well for 32, and shoot well; I thought the second quarter we got some really good looks on offense, just didn’t make any shots. We’ll need to shoot it well on Monday night and play all 32,” Smeins said.

Bump led the way with 16 for Washington, while Gage Redlinger had eight.

The Demons finish up the regular season with the loss, and will play the first round of the playoffs on Monday, when they travel to Pella.
