The Demon boys basketball team had their season ended last night against Pella, but not without a fight.

Washington lost 85-58 in a game that the score doesn’t truly reflect how hard Washington played.

The start of the game was rough, Pella went on a 10-0 run to jump out to the lead, but Washington was causing some issues for Pella by forcing quite a few turnovers. Pella hit six three’s in the first quarter though, and led 24-9 after the first.

Things looked grim after the first, but Washington got some offense in the second quarter, and actually outscored the Dutch to pull within 11 at half, 38-27. The Demons could have come even closer, but Washington was called for nine fouls in the first half to Pella’s one.

In the second half, Washington really came out and tried the best to come back, at one point having the lead down to eight about halfway through the third, thanks to four three-pointers from Daryn Seibelius. Pella came on strong in second four minutes, putting up a flurry of points to lead 65-50 after three. Washington failed to get any offense going in the fourth as Gage Redlinger, Thomas Bump and Blake Weidman all fouled out of the game.

Head coach Bryce Smeins said his team played well, but all season long he needed his team to play all 32 minutes.

“I just thought overall it was a pretty good effort. Derek Anding came in and gave us some pretty good minutes, Elijah Wood, Brett Wright; all of the guys that got in tonight, I thought for the most part [played well],” Smeins said. “Again, we talked about it in the locker room, we need to be able to sustain the effort for the [whole game], that is something that we have to work on for next year, is to compete for a full game.”

Washington was led by Seibelius with 21 points, while Mason Quigley and Thomas Bump both added 11.

Washington ends their season, and says goodbye to four seniors: Mason Quigley, Brett Wright, Elijah Wood and Walker Breard.
