Seven fire departments responded to a blaze in Kalona yesterday. A cloud of smoke from Schlabach Construction could be seen from the City of Washington yesterday afternoon at approximately 2 p.m. Firefighters on scene worked to contain the fire to a single out-building that is gold in color on the southern side of the complex. The oil fire was at 215 14th Street in Kalona, near Highway 22.
Tanker trucks from Johnson and Keokuk counties were on site. Wellman Fire, Kalona Fire, Washington Fire, Riverside Fire, Ainsworth Fire and area first responders, as well as Washington County Sheriff’s personnel responded to the scene. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed at this time.
