February is National Children’s Dental Month. The Iowa Department of Public Health has the I-Smile program to help children access dental care across the state. Sheila Temple with Washington County Public Health explains that the program is for children ages zero to 21 and for pregnant women.

Temple states that children should be brushing twice a day, with parents’ help up to age 8, and flossing once a day when teeth are touching. She does state that it is recommended that children see a dentist by age 1 or within six months of the first tooth erupting.
