A suspected scam reported in Jefferson County may involve a legitimate business. The Fairfield Police Department alerted residents on Thursday of the potential scam involving letters soliciting water line insurance for the portion that runs between homes and the city’s water main. The mailers asked for credit card information, and calls made to the phone number provided raised suspicion.
On Friday, the department made contact with the attorney for the business that sent the mailers, HomeServe USA, who told them the company was registered with the Better Business Bureau. Officers have not been able to confirm their membership.
The attorney also told the department they are not allowed to call their service insurance in Iowa, but remain compliant with Better Business Bureau guidelines. While they were not able to find any illegal activity in this case, the Fairfield PD cautions all citizens to be careful with their personal information.
