An important part of the Christian calendar begins today. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of lent, a 46 day period that will end on Easter. The practice of Christians having ashes put on their foreheads is where Ash Wednesday gets its name. The ashes used are normally collected from the burning of palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday, which takes place the Sunday before Easter.
