Kalona’s engineer will be in town next week to go over the draft of a document that’s being sent to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The request for a revision to the 100 year floodplain was prompted by an Iowa Flood Center analysis of a study done on Salvesen Creek. They determined that around 70 homes and businesses were incorrectly included in the floodplain.
City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh shares that once the letter is sent, it will take around 90 days for FEMA to review it. If a revised map is issued, the lending institutions that hold the federally back mortgages for homes in the floodplain will be notified. He says homeowners will then be able to request a refund for up to 6 months worth of the premiums they paid for flood insurance.
