The Kalona City Council discussed a way to make books more accessible to the public at their meeting Monday. If the project receives funding, the city would work with the organization Little Free Library, which helps small to midsized communities set up boxes the public can borrow books from.

According to City Administrator, Ryan Schlabaugh, Friends of the Library has volunteered to sponsor the initial library at Kalona Campground, and the city is looking to partner with other organizations to manage the others. The city’s two subdivisions and trailer parks are among the ten other locations the city is considering.

Schlabaugh says they plan on applying for a Riverboat grant to finance the project that he estimates will cost $4,000 to $5,000.
