Severe weather awareness week is this week. Sheriff Jerry Dunbar suggests having a family disaster plan in case severe weather events occur in the area. He says families should practice these plans with children in a manner that doesn’t scare the children.

Also, Larry Smith, emergency management coordinator for Washington and Keokuk counties, is advising that people have a kit ready that includes a weather radio, water, food and extra medication in case severe weather hits the area. Kits should also include anything necessary for pets.
