Fireworks can be set off in Washington on limited dates. According to the City Code, fireworks may be discharged between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. July 3rd and between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. July 4th. There are also hours allowed on New Year’s Eve. The Iowa legislature allows the sale and use of consumer fireworks in the state, and the city council set specific hours they are permitted to be used in the City of Washington. The limitations were made to reduce public safety risk and nuisance to neighbors. Aerial shell kits, reloadable tubes, mine and shell devices are prohibited. Fireworks are not to be set off in public spaces including streets. The City’s annual firework display will be July 4th at dusk at the county fairgrounds.
