The Mid-Prairie girls golf team opened up 2014 with a dual meet win over Wilton Monday night at the Kalona golf course. With sustained winds of more than 20 miles per hour and gusts up to 35 miles per hour it was not a night ideal for scoring but Mid-Prairie forged ahead posting a team score of 223 to top Wilton’s 244. Following the meet Head Coach Tracy McArtor talked about his team overcoming the conditions and new golfers stepping up to lead the way.

“Really the wind was the man factor, it was warm, it was dry, if the rain showed up, it could be a whole lost worse,” McArtor said. “My thought was that if we could have four girls shoot in the 50’s, that would be more than happy with that; 220, 225 that would be good for us, and 223, I was really pleased with the girls shooting that. Allyson, it’s nothing new to her, she’s been playing a lot of golf, we’re going to have to look to her for some low scores this year, even with that 54, she had a 10 on one whole, and maybe a nine on another one, so if she eliminates those two bad holes, she’s going to be shooting in the 40’s pretty regularly.”

The Golden Hawks were led by meet medalist Allyson Wertz who fired a 54 to take home top individual honors. Following the contest, Wertz talked about her round.

“It was very windy, I had to adjust to the wind, I am not used to playing in the wind, I haven’t been outside with wind this strong in awhile, but for the first meet of the year I adjusted really well,” Wertz said. “My very first hole I came off the tee really well, and that set the par and I parred that hole.”

Other scores for Mid-Prairie included medalist runner up Courtney Cayton with a 56, Sydney Scarff scoring a 57, and Laura Yoder carding a 61. Wilton’s low score came from Mick VanWinkle, who scored a 56 sharing medalist runner up honors with Cayton. Mid-Prairie is now 1-0 on the young season and will next be in action Monday at West Liberty.
