Sirens sounded in Wellman in the late afternoon Sunday as storms passed through the area. According to the Washington Communications Center, it was reported at 5:21 p.m. that a tornado touched down and then went back up in the sky heading northeast; the National Weather Service called this a scud cloud. Weather spotters from Wellman, Kalona and Riverside were paged out with no confirmed sighting.

Larry Smith, Emergency Management Coordinator for Washington and Keokuk Counties, explains sirens are sounded when a credible sighting has occurred or the National Weather Service issues a warning.
