The Washington Demon softball team opens up their season tonight with area school Columbus Junction.

The Demons get their whole team on the field for first time tonight, so it will be interesting to see who starts for Washington.

The Demons will look to their returning veterans in Stephanie Fishback, Ashley Rausch, Grace Redlinger, Chayse Jaspering and Kolbi Breard to lead the team in the first game. Rausch will be called upon to pitch a lot of innings this year, and it will start with tonight.

Columbus Junction brings back all but three from last years team. The Wildcats struggled with the season last year, and lost to the Demons 11-1, but with a lot of kids coming back, it could be a closer game. Columbus did lose their main pitcher in Megan Pretz, so they will look for Kelsey Pretz to lead in the circle.

Demon head coach Angie Shrader said this game will definitely be more of a feel out game than anything else.

“I would agree that in my head I am not expecting an 11-1 game, I feel like it is going to be a lot closer, and we have some kids playing in positions that they haven’t practiced in much, or we have some young kids coming up and this is their first varsity start, so we have some thing that we’re going to have to work through that maybe Columbus won’t have to as much with the number of players they have returning for them,” Shrader said.

Tonight’s game is at Washington with a 7:30 start time, and you can hear it right here live on AM and FM KCII with pregame at 7 and first pitch at 7:30. The one to count on for today’s local sports coverage is AM and FM KCII.
