The IMS soccer team finished as runner-ups at the Southeast Iowa Superconference tournament this weekend, getting through ranked Columbus Junction in the second round.

In the championship game, IMS took on Danville in a close battle that went Danville’s way.

IMS only had a 30 minute break between games, but picked up where they left off with their last win to take an early 1-0 lead, when Kirby Shetler put one into the twine and take the lead into the locker room.

In the second half IMS showed their fatigue as Danville put the equalizer in about midway through the second half to make it 1-1, and then converted on another goal to take the 2-1 lead. IMS pushed to try and get another goal to force a tie, but ultimately fell 2-1 and finished as conference runner-ups.

In the second game IMS beat No. 1 seed Columbus in penalty kicks. The first half,was a stalemate, but in the second half it was Columbus star Alex Cruz who put the Wildcats on top 1-0. IMS responded with a pinball goal that Enrique Sanchez found a way to get across the line to get the goal and tie it up 1-1. In the penalty kicks IMS won 3-2 giving them the 2-1 win.

In the first round, IMS took on Holy Trinity and controlled the game early, keeping possession, but never being able to convert, so they went into the second half scoreless.

Holy Trinity came out quickly in the second half and put the pressure on as they scored a goal 19 minutes into the second half. IMS showed their resolve by coming back and putting up three in the second half to get the win. IMS got goals from Enrique Sanchez, scoring on a corner kick from Kirby Shetler and a nice header from Kobi Russom finished the scoring and the 3-1 score.

IMS finishes the regular season on Thursday against Williamsburg.
