Before the City of Kalona allows residents to raise chickens within city limits, conditions need to be established. According to Kalona Mayor Ken Herington, a list of rules and regulations is being put together by city staff.

The rules will dictate the number of chickens a homeowner can have, the size of chicken coops, and how far away a coop needs to be from a neighbor’s property. Herington says those interested will also have to fill out a form and get signatures from any property owner within 200 feet.

There isn’t much interest as of right now, with only three people expressing interest in raising chickens in their backyard. Unless they’re overwhelmed by applications, the city will consider them on a case by case basis.
