WACO School District is nearing the end of their first year operating with a four day school week. In 2012, WACO became the first district in Iowa to receive approval from the state Department of Education to pursue a shortened week.

During this school year, students have had longer days Monday through Thursday, and the choice to take electives or remediation classes on sixteen Fridays. While those Fridays at the district were optional, the vast majority of students chose to take advantage of what was being offered. Depending on their situation, they could work on topics they’re struggling with, recover credits or take college classes.

According to Superintendent of WACO Schools, Darrell Smith, around 90% of students at the elementary and secondary level chose to attend on Fridays. Given the participation, and conversations with the student council and staff, Smith adds they have no plans of making the Fridays mandatory.
