With the long Memorial Day weekend and outdoor activities, Iowa Department of Public Health is reminding Iowans to be safe by using sun screen and insect repellants. Danielle Pettit-Majewski, Washington County Public Health Director, recommends bug repellant that containts DEET on anyone over two months of age. She adds when using sun block, apply bug spray first.

IDPH reminds Iowans mosquitoes and ticks can transmit serious illness. Check for ticks after being outdoors and when outside stay on trails and avoid tall grass. Also, eliminate standing water around homes as that is where mosquitoes lay eggs.
