In an effort to reduce the amount of groundwater that makes it to Kalona’s treatment plant, an area suspected to be the source of the problem will be inspected. The sanitary sewer improvements and force main project is estimated to cost $1.2 million. Bids are set to be opened at the council’s meeting on June 12th. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says the sewer line that runs south of Highway 22 will be cleaned and examined for leaks. Those areas will then be relined. Schlabaugh adds the problems with the old line need to be addressed if they want to avoid the high cost of treating the groundwater making it to the plant.
