The Iowa Department of Public Health has released its 2013 State of Iowa HIV and AIDS end of year surveillance report. Last year, 122 Iowans were diagnosed with HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, five more than the previous year but still below the peak of 126 in 2009. Also, the number of females diagnosed increased by 13 last year. Iowans between 25 and 44 years of age were 44% of diagnoses and Iowans 45 years or older were 41% of those diagnosed.

According to the report there is an increase in late diagnoses of HIV, people who may have been infected for many years before being tested. Nine people in Washington County are living with HIV or AIDS as of December 31, 2013. Polk County has the most number of people living with the diseases in the state with 608.

The state average is 68 per 100,000 people.
