Further discussion regarding the request from Friends of Lake Darling for a gift of $15,000 to $20,000 was held at this week’s Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting. The group is raising money to fund building three more ADA-compliant, four season cabins, for a total of six cabins at the state park near Brighton.

Dr. Faye Vittetoe with Friends of Lake Darling explains the cabins are brick, handicap-accessible structures that are heated and cooled and have ADA-compliant bathrooms. They are 765 square feet with a 225 square foot porch.

Supervisor Richard Young stated they also need to consider the economic development aspect of expanding the services of the park. To which, Vittetoe said in 2003 when the park went down hill, it was an estimated $1 million loss, just for that year.

She explained the project for the cabins will be bid out early this summer and the number of cabins needs to be decided on before that time. She believes the price per cabin will be lower if there are more cabins. Three cabins will be paid with a Washington County Riverboat grant for nearly $300,000. The Supervisors decided to table the item for a week or two and are asking constituents for input.
