The first of three readings of ordinance amendments that will bring increases to Riverside’s water and sewer rates is taking place tonight. Water and sewer will go from $9 to $12 for the first 10,000 gallons to address the $953,000 shortfall in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.

City Administrator Rusty Rogerson says this fiscal year that money came from a contract the city has with the Riverside Casino, which expires in July.

A proposed casino that the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission didn’t give a gaming license to last month threatened to cut the Riverside Casino’s revenue, meaning they were unable to commit to a new contract until that decision was made.
