A group in Keota is working to build a Veterans memorial in the downtown area. Larry Sanders joined the VFW Post in Keota when he got out of the Navy in 1973. He says towards the end of WWII, a wooden monument was built to honor those who had served in the conflict. Twenty years later, the elements took their toll on the wooden structure and it was dismantled.

According to Sanders, he and other VFW members are now raising money for a black marble monument that will include the names of 1,800 Keota area Veteran’s from current conflicts to the Civil War. The group has raised a quarter of the $125,000 needed to finance the project, and are holding an auction on Saturday after the Keota Fun Days Parade to get closer to their goal.
