The Mid-Prairie softball team continued their great start in River Valley Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of West Liberty on the road Monday night. Great play at the Iowa City tournament over the weekend carried over to Monday night as the Golden Hawks jumped on the Comets early with a four run, five hit second inning where they sent 10 batters to the plate in total. Emma Troyer and Ashley Sojka each had an RBI single, Amber Kral drove in one on a walk. Mid-Prairie made it 5-0 in the third when Troyer scored for the second time. The Hawks plated two more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to run the score to 9-0. West Liberty would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth but the Hawks finished off the impressive 9-1 win. Following the contest Head Coach Kara Beatty talked about her teams approach at the plate.
“I told the girls to be patient off the bat, have smart at-bats, get ahead in the count, and then only look for flat pitches to swing at. I know she has a good change up, but we were trying to lay off of it until we were down in the count,” Beatty said.
Taylor Kurtz recorded the win for the Hawks going all seven, allowing five hits, one earned run, walking two and striking out seven. At the plate Alex Rath and Lexi Duwa were each three for four with a run scored. Troyer was two for three with two runs scored and two RBI. Mid-Prairie finished out the doubleheader sweep taking game two by a 12-3 count running their record to 10-5 overall and improving to 7-1 in conference play. Mid-Prairie is next in action Thursday when they host Camanche.
