The latest round of the Mid-Prairie and Iowa City Regina softball rivalry saw more drama Monday night in Kalona. The Golden Hawks took game one in walk off fashion by a 7-6 score. On the night Mid-Prairie was shaky defensively and the Regals made them pay. After the first two batters of the game reached on errors, first baseman Megan Bonnett smacked an opposite field three run homer on the first pitch she saw from Golden Hawk starter Taylor Kurtz.

The Hawks began chipping away with one run in the first when Amber Kral drove in Alex Rath following her lead off triple. Mid-Prairie took the lead in the second with a six hit four run inning, with Kral delivering another RBI. The 5-3 lead held until the Regina sixth when the Regals cut the lead to just one at 5-4. In the top of the seventh Mid-Prairie called on Emma Troyer in a save situation but it was Bonnett who came up big late, smacking a two run homer, her second of the night and putting the Regals on top 6-5. In the bottom half it was Mid-Prairie’s turn for heroics. Rath led off the inning with a single, Kral delivered an RBI single to tie the game and with two down and the bases loaded pinch hitter Allie Naylor stepped in and walked off with and RBI single driving in Amanda Miller for the 7-6 win. Following the game Mid-Prairie Head Coach Kara Beatty talked about her teams approach in their final at bat.

“That last inning we executed perfectly,” Beatty said. “We got our lead-off on, we moved her over, moved her over again, and had a pinch hitter come in with a pinch hit.”

Troyer took the win in game one for Mid-Prairie, going one inning giving up one hit and two runs.

Game two belonged to the Regals as they raced out to a 6-0 lead, and finished with a 6-3 win. The Regals scored a single run in the first inning on a Bonnett solo homer, her third long ball of the night to make it 1-0. Regina took advantage of more Mid-Prairie miscues in the field in the second inning, scoring three times on three hits and three Mid-Prairie errors in the frame. Mid-Prairie showed life in the fourth against tough Regina starter Hannah Stein, as the Hawks broke through for three runs with two outs on four consecutive hits to make it 6-3 but could get no closer down the stretch. Offensively in the doubleheader Mid-Prairie was led by Amber Kral who went four for six with two RBI and a run scored. Alex Rath was five for seven with two triples and three RBI.
