It’s now mandatory to report porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, or PEDV, found in hog herds. The federal order requires pork producers to report the disease to the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service or to state veterinarians. According to the USDA, the virus has spread to 30 states and has killed approximately seven million piglets. Ron Birkenholz, with the Iowa Pork Producers, says pigs under three weeks old die within just a few days of contracting PEDv.
