An attempt to avoid further damage to downtown businesses is being made in Kalona. During the downtown renovation, alleys between 4th and 5th Street, as well as B and C Avenue, were paved.

According to Mayor Ken Herington, when semis need to take those alleys for deliveries, there isn’t enough room when they try to pull out. This has led to damage to buildings at least three times.

To avoid confusion and more property damage, signs will be put up indicating turns are not allowed. Herington says for example, if a driver enters the alley from 4th street, they want them to continue to 6th street before turning where there’s adequate room.
